Mattress and Bed Base Sizes

Compatibility

Choosing the right mattress size is essential for a good night's sleep and making the most of your bed base, especially if it's motorized or if you sleep as a couple.

Standard mattress sizes

  • Single: 80×190 / 80×200 cm
  • Double (French size): 120×190 / 120×200 cm
  • Standard double: 160×190 / 160×200 cm
  • King size: 180×200 cm

If you have a bed base with a different size (e.g., 85×195 or 170×200), it is possible to have a custom-made mattress.

Mattress and bed base must be the same size

The mattress must be exactly the same size as the bed base.

  • A smaller mattress moves around and creates gaps at the sides
  • A larger mattress deforms and loses support

Even a few centimeters of difference can worsen comfort and reduce the lifespan of the mattress.

Compatibility with motorized bed bases

Not all mattresses are suitable for articulated electric bed bases.

For motorized bed bases, the following are ideal:

  • Memory foam
  • Natural latex
  • Water foam

These materials are flexible and follow the movement of the bed base without bending or being damaged.

Traditional spring mattresses or those with a too rigid structure are not recommended for motorized bed bases.

Couples: better one double or two singles?

If you have very different needs (weight, firmness, posture), the best solution is:

2 single mattresses on a split double bed base

  • each chooses their own firmness
  • less disturbance from partner's movements
  • possibility of using independent motorized bed bases

Aesthetically, it will still look like a single double bed, especially with a double mattress protector.

Hotels and accommodation facilities

In hotels, the following configuration is widely used:

2 mattresses 80×200 on a 160×200 base

This way, it can offer:

  • a double bed for couples
  • two separate single beds when needed

It is the most versatile and practical solution also for B&Bs and holiday homes.

When to choose a custom-made mattress

  • Non-standard bed bases (e.g., 195 cm length)
  • Handmade or antique beds
  • Specific space requirements

A custom-made mattress avoids forced adaptations and guarantees the same comfort as standard models.

Mattress height and bed base type

On classic slatted bed bases, you can use any height.

On motorized bed bases, it is preferable to stay between 22 and 28 cm to ensure maximum flexibility.

Frequently asked questions about sizes

Does the mattress have to be the exact same size as the bed base?+

Yes, the mattress and bed base must be the same size: a smaller mattress moves around and creates gaps at the sides, while a larger one deforms and loses support, even with a few centimeters difference.

What materials are suitable for motorized bed bases?+

Memory foam, natural latex, and water foam are the most suitable because they are flexible and can follow the movement of the bed base. Traditional spring mattresses or those that are too rigid are not recommended for motorized bed bases.

Is it better to have one double mattress or two single mattresses for a couple?+

If partners have very different needs in terms of weight, firmness, or posture, two single mattresses on a split double bed base allow each person to choose their own firmness, reducing the transmission of movement.

I have a bed base with a non-standard size: can I still order?+

Yes, all our mattresses and bed bases can be made to order in special sizes, for example, for 195 cm bed bases or handmade antique beds.

What mattress height can I use on a motorized bed base?+

It is preferable to stay between 22 and 28 cm in height to ensure maximum flexibility for the head and foot adjustable movements of the bed base.
